General Timeline for HP students

*Note that this timeline may not work for everyone, as each student may start from a different point. 

First Year

Join Clubs & Get Involved: Explore and join student clubs to build connections and stay informed about relevant opportunities. 

Develop a Support Network: Start building relationships with peers, faculty, and mentors who can offer advice, guidance, and encouragement throughout your academic journey. 

Create Study Strategies: Experiment with different study methods to identify what works best for you. Stay organized and disciplined to build a solid academic foundation. 

Explore Clinical Experience: Begin exploring opportunities for clinical experience. Many students volunteer at local hospitals or clinics or seek other relevant certifications or jobs. 

Begin Shadowing: Seek out shadowing opportunities with professionals in the field you’re interested in. 

GPA: Complete prerequisite courses with strong grades to maintain a solid science and cumulative GPA. 

Continue Clinical Experience: Continue or begin clinical experience.  

Continue Shadowing: Continue shadowing opportunities with professionals in the field you’re interested in. 

Research Schools of Interest: Begin exploring potential schools. Understand their prerequisites and the qualities they look for in applicants. Review the mission and value statements of these programs and consider the financial aspects of the application process. 

Prepare for Standardized Exams: Begin to prepare for standardized exams (e.g., MCAT, GRE, DAT, etc.). Consider prep courses or utilizing self-study resources. 

Continue Clinical Experience: Expand your clinical experience by continuing shadowing, volunteering, or working in healthcare relevant settings. 

Consider Letters of Recommendation: Think about faculty members, supervisors, or professionals who could write strong letters of recommendation for you. 

 

Application Process: Start the application process. Many students begin this process in their junior year and continue into their senior year. Familiarize yourself with the required program materials and deadlines. 

Submit Secondary Applications: After submitting your primary applications, many are required to submit secondary applications. Begin preparing your responses to the specific questions or essays required. 

Continue Clinical & Research Experience: Continue gaining clinical experience, conducting research, or engaging in other relevant activities that will strengthen your application and overall candidacy.  

Maintain GPA: Complete your undergraduate degree and prerequisite courses with strong grades to maintain a solid science and cumulative GPA.
